BrightData is a large technology company that specializes in web scraping for enterprise clients. For personal use, BrightData is unlikely to be a good fit, since it has a complex interface that is geared toward developers, and you also need to pass KYC if you want access to all websites, because without KYC your access will be limited. Overall, BrightData is really only suitable for enterprise clients doing web scraping, and as you continue reading this article, you will understand why we think so.

Free Trial

Before getting started with BrightData, we were pleasantly surprised by the free trial. The only catch is that you actually need to link a bank card, even though the homepage says "No credit card required".

The free trial gives you $5 in balance after you link your bank card. To do this, register on the website https://brightdata.com/ by clicking the "Start Free Trial" button in the top right corner.

After registration, you will be redirected to the main page, which is essentially a chat with an AI where you can ask any questions you are interested in. But at this stage, we are focused on the free trial.

Go to the "Billing" menu item and click the "Activate" button as shown in the screenshot below.

A pop up window will appear where you need to select the option on the right and click "Add payment method" as shown in the screenshot below.

Next, a page will open where you need to link one of the available payment methods. You can see the options in the screenshot below.

After you link one of the payment methods, $5 will be credited to your balance. Unlike other proxy providers, you do not need to pay a minimum amount to test the proxies, because BrightData allows you to test their proxies for 30 days using the $5 balance completely free. The only thing you need to do is link a payment method.

Now you can move on to testing the proxies. As you can see, the BrightData interface is heavily focused on web scraping and is primarily designed for technical users.

Proxy Types

The company offers the following types of proxies:

In short, and considering that BrightData is focused on web scraping, static proxies are useful when you need to maintain a session for a long period of time, for example for automation that mimics a real user, while rotating proxies are better suited for large scale data collection. Datacenter proxies get blocked more often but are cheaper, while residential proxies are more anonymous, get blocked less often, but are more expensive. Ideally, it is best to mix them, meaning you first try to connect using datacenter proxies, and if that does not work, then switch to residential proxies. The choice can also depend on the target website, some may require only residential proxies, while for others datacenter proxies will be enough.

Proxy Setup

The first step is to create a proxy endpoint. To do this, select "Create Proxy" and choose the proxy type you are interested in.

Next, move on to configuring the proxy endpoint. Here you can set a name and description, choose a proxy subtype, select a country, and specify additional targeting options, which by the way need to be configured manually, which is not very convenient.

After completing all the settings, click "Create proxy" and the system will generate an endpoint that you can use.

Proxy information will be displayed inside the terminal, which can also be customized by choosing its format, programming language, or country. As for the country, by default the IP addresses of the countries you selected during the initial setup will be used, but you can also manually specify a country by adding "-country-XX" to the login, where XX is the country code.

This setup format once again shows that BrightData is focused specifically on web scraping for developers in enterprise companies.

By the way, after creating an endpoint, you can make changes to the settings you configured earlier. To do this, click on the created endpoint.

Then go to the "Configuration" tab where you will see the settings you previously created. Make the necessary changes and save the settings.

We want to emphasize again that proxy setup in BrightData is actually very complex compared to other proxy providers, and the main drawback is that they do not have a proper proxy configurator, so everything has to be set up manually. Here is some official documentation that will help you:

2. Detailed geotargeting. With this documentation, you will learn how to configure targeting by region, city, or internet provider.

3. Session configuration (by default the IP address changes with every request). With this documentation, you will learn how to make the IP address stay the same across requests.

Interestingly, BrightData does not support SOCKS5 proxies, so do not even try to connect through this protocol. They only support HTTP, which is actually a great protocol for web scraping.

Testing and Proxy Quality

Now that we have created the proxies, it is time to test them. We usually do this using our proxy checker, but we were not able to do that because it turns out BrightData blocks access to our website.

If you try checking access to our checker https://checker.caproxy.com/ through the "Playground" tab, you will get a 400 error. This is because we did not pass KYC verification on the BrightData website, and their proxies are not allowed to be used on all websites without it.

However, as it turned out, this applies only to rotating proxies. If you configure static proxies, everything works for most websites and there are no restrictions. We tested static ISP proxies, the ping is low or within a normal range, and the country is detected correctly.

KYC Verification

Since BrightData strictly complies with regulations and collects proxies in an ethical way, you need to complete KYC verification to fully use rotating proxies. Moreover, KYC must be completed using a corporate email and also requires a video call with one of their representatives.

That said, KYC is not mandatory and is only required to get full access to all websites through BrightData proxies. You may not need KYC for your use case, try checking access to your target websites, and if they load normally, you can continue working without KYC verification.

Datasets

BrightData offers ready made datasets. This means that instead of setting up data collection yourself, you can use pre built datasets, for example buying ready made data such as LinkedIn profiles or Amazon product data and more.

So before using BrightData proxies, check if their ready made datasets might work for you. The price is listed per record, and there is also a minimum order amount.

Web Scraping

BrightData offers not only high quality proxies but also powerful web scraping tools. If you take a closer look, it is not just a simple web scraping API, it is something more advanced.
